The earliest well-known account dates to 1955, when a businessman said he watched several frog-faced creatures standing upright by the roadside at night, one of them holding a rod that threw off sparks. The legend gained new life in 1972, when two Loveland police officers, in two separate incidents months apart, reported seeing a roughly three-to-four-foot creature that stood and crouched like a frog near the Little Miami River.
The iguana confession
One of the 1972 officers later offered a deflating explanation: he said the creature he saw was most likely a large iguana, possibly an escaped pet, that had lost its tail and was sitting up on a guardrail. That admission satisfied many skeptics, but it did nothing to slow the legend, which had already taken on a life of its own in southwestern Ohio.
